Slovenia is a country of forests, , which cover almost 60% of its surface. In percentage of forest cover, Slovenia comes in the third place in the European Union, after Sweden and Finland. Slovenians feel strongly connected with the forest. This is shown by the fact that one in four Slovenians is a forest-owner. Without forests, Slovenians can hardly imagine their past, present and future.  

Because of the forest, Slovenia has clean drinking water and largely unpolluted air. Hiking in the forests keeps us healthy and in good physical shape. Forests which are in close vicinity of the cities are visited by large numbers of people, who find an escape from day-to-day chores and trials of modern city-life.

Slovene is one of the smallest South Slavic languages in terms of geographical distribution and number of speakers, but it has the most dialects - about 50, grouped into 7 dialect groups.

The Freising manuscripts, dating from the late 10th or the early 11th century, are considered the oldest documents in Slovene.

Like all Slavic languages, Slovene traces its roots to the same proto-Slavic group of languages that produced Old Church Slavonic. The earliest known examples of a distinct, written dialect possibly connected to Slovene are from the Freising manuscripts, known in Slovene as Brižinski spomeniki. The consensus estimate of their date of origin is between 972 and 1039 (most likely before 1000). These religious writings are among the oldest surviving manuscripts in any Slavic language.

Žametovka or modra kavčina (Bleu de Cologne), confirmed at 400 years of age, is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest vine in the world still producing fruit. The old vine was planted in Maribor at the end of the Middle Ages during the Turkish invasions. In 2002 Slovenian archaelogists uncovered a wooden wheel some 20 kilometres southeast of Ljubljana. It was established that the wheel is between 5.100 and 5.350 years old. This makes it the oldest in the world ever found.

Global basketball audience is witnessing rise of a new star. Within the last two years at NBA and playing for Dallas Mavericks franchise, Slovenian Luka Dončić has established himself a name and an admiration among basketball fans. After he had became also an all-star player this year, he is now in the group of top NBA basketball players. Some say even one of top3 most popular ones of today.

Garnbret has won multiple lead climbing and bouldering events. Ageing only 15, she won her first international title in the lead competition of the 2014 World Youth B Championships. Just after turning 16, she started competing in the senior category of the Lead Climbing World Cup. Since then, she participated in 31 Lead Climbing World Cup events, missing the podium in only four of them. 

In 2016, aged 17, Garnbret won the seasonal titles of the IFSC Climbing World Cup in lead and combined, World Championships in lead climbing, and World Youth A Championships in both Lead climbing and Bouldering. 

 From 2016 to 2018, she was awarded the seasonal title in both lead climbing and combined disciplines. In 2018 and 2019, she won the World Championships in bouldering and combined, and also reclaimed the lead title in 2019. 

In 2019, at age 20, Garnbret became the first athlete to win all Bouldering World Cup events in a season. Throughout six events, she placed first in six qualifications, four semi-finals, and six finals, topping 74 out of 78 boulder problems overall.

Primož Roglič is a Slovenian racing cyclist, who currently rides for UCI Worldteam Jumbo–Visma. Roglič started his career as a ski jumper but then shifted to cycling. At the 2017 Tour de France, Roglič became the first Slovenian to win a Tour de France stage. In September 2019, Roglič won the Vuelta a España, becoming the first Slovenian to win a Grand Tour competition.

In 2020, Roglič's first race of the season was the Slovenian National Road Race Championships brought him the national title for the first time. And he is only worming up.

Tadej Pogačar is a Slovenian cyclist and member of UCI WorldTeam UAE Team Emirates. In 2019, at age 20, he became the youngest cyclist that has won the Tour of California. The same year he finished as third at Vuelta an España.

In 2020, he became the first Slovenian to win the Tour de France. Next year he won the most prestigious tour once again and became the youngest two-time Tour winner of all time.

At the Olympic Games in Tokyo, he won third place on the 234 km long route and has won Slovenia's first Olympic medal in cycling.  Thus, he broke the ice for other Slovenian sportsmen to win new medals at the Olympics in Tokyo.

Alenka Artnik started deep diving at the age of 30. In 2016, she won the world championship in deep diving with a single fin for the first time and the following year she repeated the success. In 2017, she dived more than 100 m in Honduras and became only the fourth woman with this achievement.

In recent years, she has achieved more success in competitions and has repeatedly improved her record in deep diving. This year, on the seventh day of competition on Long Island (Bahamas), she further improved her world record in the constant weightlifting discipline. She improved the world record three times in one week and set a new milestone at a depth of 122 m.

At the recent Olympic Games in Tokyo, Slovenia`s sportsmen and sportswomen proved themselves again. 54 of them represented our country. The golden medals were won by cyclist Primož Roglič, white-water canoeist Benjamin Savšek and climber Janja Garnbret. Judoist Tina Trstenjak won a silver medal and cyclist Tadej Pogačar provided additional joy with a bronze medal. With a total of five medals, Slovenia ranked 31st in terms of the number and type of medals. In terms of the number of Olympic medals achieved per capita, Slovenia places as one of the best. In addition to the medal winners, we congratulate our as well as all the other athletes who showed their fighting spirit and excellent results.
